Media Studies

What type of learner are you?

There are three types of learner, there are the Audio, Visual and the Kinesthetic. Below is information about these three different learning styles which will help you to determine which of these is you.

Audio Learning

An Audio learner learns best by simply hearing the information hence the name, so a best thing to do is to buy a microphone, these can be as little as £3.00 in the shops, plug it into your computer and then record yourself reading the information. Most computers have sound recording software already, but a free piece of software called Audacity may also help you too. Very few of us like the sound of our own voice, but if it means you will get a better grade, isn't that worth it?

Visual Learning

A visual learner learns best by things they can see, hence the name again. Useful tips can be to watch TV programmes that contain the information. This can be difficult, but if you can get copies of information on video, then great. Video sites will have information.

Kinesthetic Learning

Unlike the other two, when you see the word kinesthetic, it isn't so obvious. According to studies, most people are Kinesthetic learners. It involves you carrying out an action. Remember Practical lessons in science? Well if you really enjoyed those then you could be a Kinesthetic learner. Make notes of things and stick them everywhere in your room or even your home. Stick them on the fridge, next to the phone, all sorts of places you visit often.

Revision Tips

Below are five tips to help you when revising. Follow these and you will be well on your way...to that A.

1. Revising environment is important. Don't revise where there are other people as they will talk to you, if you are revising by a computer, leave it switched off and if you are revising on the computer, really focus on revising and don't get distracted by any other websites like YouTube or MySpace, and finally on environment, keep your mobile phone turned off!

2. Don't revise for hours on end! you'll only get bored and end up getting distracted, it is best to do no more than an hours revision a night. But don't revise solidly, take a couple of breaks at 20 minute intervals, get a drink and spend 5 minutes relaxing. But don't get distracted during your break. Don't have a 20 minute break after 20 minutes of revision as you will probably put revision aside. Make sure your breaks do not excede 5 minutes.

3. Don't revise whilst you are tired, don't leave it till midnight as chances are, nothing will really sink in. And if you are doing it when you are tired, it will mean you won't be fully awake when you go to school the next morning. Revise at a suitable time. Don't do it when you get home from school as you need a little break from your gruelling day in school. A good time to do it is around 8pm at night.

4. Remember the Learning Styles mentioned earlier? Find out which of those you are! Then you can work out the best way to revise. If you are an Audio learner, Record yourself reading the information then play it back. If you are a Visual learner, watch videos and look at pictures and diagrams and last but not least, if you are kinesthetic, get out the pen and paper and blutack! Write notes, stick them in all sorts of places so when you go there you can read the information and learn!

5. Finally, its time to talk about food, the right food. Carbohydrate foods like grain products, sandwiches (the bread has the carbs) pasta has carbs too even the humble spud (thats potato incase you didn't know). Fish contains Omega 3, very good for concentration, but if you don't like fish, don't worry. When you want a drink in those breaks, drink water. Don't like water? Buy flavoured water. As long as it isn't carbonated water that has sugar in. Sugary foods aren't a wise choice.

Thats the Five tips I think will help you with revision. I hope they work for you!!!
